Graduate ProgramsDoctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)For students who hold a master's or AuD degree, the department offers the PhD degree with concentrations in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Speech-Language Science, or Hearing Science. A student's academic program will consist of course work within the department, as well as in related areas such as linguistics, psychology, statistics, engineering, or education. Students completing the program will be prepared for careers as senior clinicians, laboratory researchers, and university professors. Details on the requirements of the doctoral degree program are available from the Graduate Studies Chair (shsgradchair@osu.edu). The doctoral program in Speech and Hearing Science is intended to be tailored to the interests and background of the individual student. Other than the requirements for course work in Research Tools (a minimum of 15 credit hours) and courses outside the Department (a minimum of 15 credit hours) there are no required courses. This apparent lack of structure may be daunting to some prospective doctoral students, but the faculty is committed to requirements that permit the student and her or his advisor(s) to design coursework and laboratory experiences that will be best suited to the student's specific area of interest. Research and scholarly activity is expected in at least three different settings before the student begins a dissertation project. It is further recommended that one of the three lab sites be outside the department if possible. For further details of University requirements link to the Graduate School Bulletin: ( http://www-afa.adm.ohio-state.edu/gradbull/doctdegr.html ). Doctor of Audiology (AuD)Post-Baccalaureate AuD: The Department offers a post-baccalaureate Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program for students interested in clinical practice in audiology. The AuD program is a 4-year program and is designed to extend over 15 quarters of consecutive full-time enrollment. The AuD program will prepare students for certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and for licensure in the state of Ohio. The curriculum for the AuD program and additional information on the program can be found in the "Information for Prospective Student" section of our web page. If you have further questions, please contact the Chair of the Audiology Oversight Committee, Dr. Wayne King, at king.812@osu.edu Post-Masters AuD: Students who received a Master of Arts (MA) in audiology from Ohio State after 1993 may be eligible to enroll in an individually designed post-masters AuD program. Please contact the Chair of the Audiology Oversight Committee, Dr. Wayne King (king.812@osu.edu), to receive further information. Please note that only students who hold a Master's degree in audiology from Ohio State are eligible. At the present time, we are unable to offer a postmasters AuD for students with graduate degrees in audiology from programs other than Ohio State.
AuD/PhD Dual Degree in AudiologyThe Department of Speech and Hearing Science offers a dual degree (AuD/PhD)
for those students interested in receiving both a professional doctoral
degree (AuD) and a research doctoral degree (PhD). The professional
doctoral program is designed to meet the current requirements for the
ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and a license to practice
as an audiologist in the State of Ohio. The research doctoral program
is designed for students interested in a traditional PhD program-one
that focuses on research and prepares students for careers in teaching
and research. A description of the curriculum and application information
can be found below.
MA/PhD Dual Degree in Speech-Language PathologyThe Department of Speech and Hearing Science offers a dual degree (MA/PhD)
program for speech-language pathology students entering the graduate
program who wish to pursue professional training and clinical certification
(obtained via the MA degree) and the PhD degree. Such students will
be designated as MA/PhD students and follow a somewhat modified sequence
of course work and clinical practicum in order to satisfy the requirements
for both degrees in five years.
Master of Arts (MA) Speech-Language PathologyThe Department of Speech and Hearing Science offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree with an emphasis in speech-language pathology for those students interested in practicing as speech-language pathologists. The program is designed to meet the requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and a license to practice as a speech-language pathologist in the State of Ohio. The professional education program is designed to extend over eight quarters of consecutive full-time enrollment. The curriculum for the MA program in speech-language pathology and
application information can be found below. If you have further questions,
please contact the Chair of the Speech-Language Pathology Oversight
Committee, Dr. Michael Trudeau, at trudeau.1@osu.edu
Master of Arts (MA) Speech Hearing ScienceThe Department also offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree with an emphasis in speech and hearing science for those not interested in practicing as speech-language pathologists or audiologists. Individuals following this tract often pursue careers in industry, or continue into the PhD program in order to prepare for careers as research scientists or in academia. Completion of a masters thesis is required for this program.
