Understanding Dysphagia
The medical term for difficulty with swallowing is dysphagia. In addition to having trouble swallowing, patients may also struggle with:
- Difficulty chewing
- Throat clearing or coughing with eating
- Feeling food or liquids get stuck in your throat
- Recurrent pneumonia related to aspiration (food or liquid going down into lungs)
- Weight loss or dehydration from not being able to eat/drink enough
Dysphagia can occur for a variety of reasons in adults including but not limited to head and neck cancer, stroke, neurologic conditions, and autoimmune disorders.
Dysphagia in Children
Children can also have difficulty feeding and swallowing related to:
- Prematurity
- Cerebral palsy
- Cleft palate
- Respiratory problems
