Autumn Kickoff Brings Students Together
The Department of Speech and Hearing Science and NSSLHA kicked off the new academic year with a successful Autumn Kickoff event on September 9. Students had the opportunity to connect with faculty, staff, and peers while learning about the many ways to get involved in the department. The event was a fun and welcoming start to the semester, helping students build connections and discover opportunities for engagement and service.
OSU Newark Major Exploration Fair
On Wednesday, September 16, Undergraduate Chair Dr. Youkyung Bae, Undergraduate Advisor Maria Roth, and two Speech and Hearing Science Ambassadors traveled to OSU Newark to connect with students at the Major Exploration Fair. Seniors Leah Brown and Arianna Bagheri welcomed students who visited the information table and shared details about their experiences in Speech and Hearing Science.
Josie Rimkus Awarded Undergraduate Research Scholarship
Josie Rimkus, a fourth year SHS Undergraduate, was awarded an Autumn 2026 Undergraduate Research Scholarship (URS) for completing her Honors Research Thesis entitled “Sociocultural influences on disfluency behavior in natural spontaneous conversations.” URS is a competitive funding mechanism through the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State in recognition of excellent research proposals. Josie’s research project is a part of a larger research program in the Speech Perception & Acoustics Lab directed by Drs. Fox & Jacewicz; she presented portions of her ongoing acoustic study at the 2026 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum at Ohio State, and at the joint meeting of the Acoustical Society of America/Acoustical Society of Japan in Honolulu, HI, 2025.
