Summer Prerequisite Bridge Program Course Offerings
The Summer Prerequisite Bridge Program offers undergraduate courses in Speech and Hearing Science that are typically required for admission into graduate programs in audiology and speech-language pathology. The courses will be offered in an entirely online format in the 8-week Session 2 from June 5 to July 30, 2026.
If you plan to use OSU summer bridge program credits for programs other than OSU, check with those programs for their prerequisite requirements and ensure they will accept OSU credits.
Please note that the Ohio State Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology (MA-SLP) graduate program and the Ohio State Doctor of Audiology (AuD) graduate program have their own set of prerequisites. Please consult the following pages before planning your courses if your intention is to apply to these programs in the future:
SPHHRNG 3320 Principles of Phonetics (3 credits)
Provides articulatory and acoustic descriptions of speech sounds and a comparative study of phonetic transcription systems.

SPHHRNG 3330 Language Acquisition (3 credits)
Introduction to language acquisition in normal children.

SPHHRNG 3340 Introduction to the Art and Science of Sound (3 credits)
Designed to teach the basic principles of acoustics to undergraduate students in the Arts and Sciences who have had little previous experience with math or biological and physical sciences. The student should gain an appreciation of the concepts underlying the generation, transmission and measurement of sound waves traveling through air.

SPHHRNG 3360 Observation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (3 credits)
Observation in appraisal and treatment of communication disorders.

SPHHRNG 4420 Anatomy, Physiology, and Science of Speech (3 credits)
Anatomy and physiology of the structures involved in speech production and the acoustic characteristics of speech sounds.
*Prerequisite: SPHHRNG 3320 and Biology 1101, 1102, 1113, or 1114

SPHHRNG 4440 Anatomy, Physiology, and Science of Hearing (3 credits)
The anatomical properties and physiological processes of the system of hearing and balance in humans and the stimulus processing capabilities of the normal auditory system.
*Prerequisite: SPHHRNG 3340 and Biology 1101, 1102, 1113, or 1114

SPHHRNG 4540 Introduction to Audiology (3 credits)
The nature, causes, identification, and rehabilitative treatment of persons with hearing disorders.

SPHHRNG 5732 Introduction to Aural Rehabilitation (3 credits)
Assessment and management of communication disorders associated with hearing loss.
