Equity and Inclusion Committee
We are proud to be members of the Equity and Inclusion Committee in the Department of Speech & Hearing Science, established in 2015.
Our mission is to help recruit and support underrepresented Speech and Hearing Science students, faculty, and staff; and foster a culture that cultivates and acknowledges the inherent value in diversity of people and ideas within our department and our field.
Our committee consists of academic faculty, clinical faculty, and staff across our undergraduate and graduate programs. We thank you for your interest, and we welcome feedback about our committee and diversity within the field of Speech & Hearing Science!
Some of our recent work includes:
- Participating in the Graduate and Professional Students (GPS) and McNair Scholars Visitation Programs to encourage enrollment in our discipline
- Collaborating with the Latinx Space for Enrichment and Research (LASER) program to partner with a local high school with heritage Spanish language speakers to bring them to our department and learn about Speech and Hearing Science
- Collaborating with Explorations in Medicine to introduce our field at a local high school with a high proportion of underrepresented students
- Continuing discussion about the predictive validity of the GRE with our faculty
- Annually nominating admitted students for Graduate Enrichment Fellowships
- Offering annual cash award for 2 admitted and 1 current underrepresented students
- Requiring faculty to include a statement of equity and inclusion on all syllabi
- Requiring all faculty, staff, and graduate students to complete the Kirwin Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity’s Implicit Bias Training on-line and Harvard’s Race-based Implicit Association Test
- Holding a follow-up training for faculty and staff on effective dialogue and social identity
