Kirah Pringle and Nada Elhajomar were awarded the first Steve’s Way Assistive Technology and Augmentative and Alternative Communicaton Scholarship. This scholarship was made possible by Tom Meadows and was established in honor of a close friend who had ALS and needed assistive technology. Tom helped Steve unearth hidden features in the iPhone and iPad that made it possible for Steve to communicate when he lost his ability to speak with his voice. Pringle and Elhajomar will be working with Dr. Amy Miller Sonntag to develop resources and workshops to share this information with others in the community.
Meadows also donated funds to increase the number of iPads and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices in the OSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. This equipment will be used to educate students on the use and features of AAC in clinic and classroom experiences.
The Department also hosted a workshop by Meadows on how to use these hidden features that was attended by students in the MA SLP program and SLPs in the community. Thank you, Tom!
