This fall, undergraduate students in Speech and Hearing Science have launched a new volunteer experience with Opening Minds Through Art (OMA), an intergenerational program that pairs college students with older adults living with dementia. Guided by Professor Cassondra Wilson, the program emphasizes creativity, dignity, and connection as students support residents in expressing themselves through the arts.
So far, 16 student volunteers are actively engaged at Westminster Thurber, with eight attending in the morning session and eight in the afternoon. Each week, students and residents work side by side to create original works of art while also sharing stories, laughter, and conversation. In addition to promoting inclusion and joy for older adults, OMA provides students with invaluable opportunities to strengthen their communication skills, practice empathy, and see firsthand the power of human connection. This new partnership represents an exciting step forward in bridging generations, lifting barriers, and enriching our community through art and service!
