The Department of Speech and Hearing Science will soon be offering a new service-learning course for undergraduate students. The course, Community Outreach in Speech and Hearing Science: Hearing Screenings, will be offered as an independent study autumn semester 2024, and as a regular course in subsequent fall semesters, pending Arts and Sciences curriculum committee approval. The course is being developed and will be taught by Dr. Julie Hazelbaker. The overarching goal of this service-learning course is for students to become more aware of varying social structures and to analyze why community engagement is important/necessary. In the course, students will be trained on screening techniques and the most effective ways to successfully offer services in different environments. In partnership with The Ohio State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, students will provide free hearing screenings to clients of different ages, cultures, races, and socioeconomic positions. It's an exciting opportunity to expand our presence in the community and to provide undergraduate students with experiential learning opportunities.
