Nicole Wiksten, a clinical faculty member who practices and teaches in the area of swallowing, attended the Dysphagia Research Society meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in March. This is a meeting of international scientists and clinicians who present and critique the newest research in the field of swallowing disorders. Our program's recent PhD graduate, Dr. Veena Kallambettu, had two presentation proposals accepted. They also took advantage of this excellent opportunity for networking with colleagues from around the world to collaborate on advancing this area of practice.
The first-year students participated in a lab experience in the College of Nursing where they gained hands on experience with medical equipment. They reported feeling much more comfortable identifying the tubes, lines and drains they might see during their medical clinical experiences. They learned how each is used and practiced shifting and boosting the "patients" in their beds.
