This semester, all graduate students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science were required to participate in two in-person DEI workshops on Sept. 13 and Nov. 15. Dr. Vondolee Delgado-Nixon, Associate Professor of Clinical Optometry at OSU, led each of the 2-hour sessions. She is a nationally recognized expert on DEI. As Chief Diversity Officer for the College of Optometry, her work has been awarded the Insight into Diversity Magazine HEED award for excellence in diversity for three straight years in a row; no other Optometry School has ever received the HEED award.
We are truly fortunate that Dr. Delgado-Nixon has agreed to work with our department. The workshops have been wonderfully interactive and engaging and have really helped shed light on Implicit Bias, and how critical it is that we recognize and address those biases in our workâand more specifically as Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists. A 3rd and final workshop with Dr. Delgado-Nixon is planned for SP23.
